Our Allergy Clinic has conducted extensive basic and clinical research that strives to understand, treat, and ultimately prevent asthma and other allergic diseases.

Our main research has focused on deviating and/or reversing Th2 immune response into a protective Th1 response as a potential treatment for Th2-associated allergic diseases. Using an animal model of allergic asthma, we have demonstrated that bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG), one of potent inducers of Th1 response, immunization suppresses Th2 immune response and inhibits the development of allergic asthmatic reaction. Based on these observations, we have recently performed a randomized, controlled trial on therapeutic effects of BCG vaccination in asthmatic patients, which is the first clinical investigation to show that BCG vaccination may be an effective therapeutic immunomodulator against asthma. We are keeping up our further research on the therapeutic and/or preventive effects of BCG vaccination on asthma and other allergic diseases, and are going to develop the other new immunomodulators in treating and/or preventing allergies.

Our Allergy Clinic is also interested in investigating the effects of outdoor air pollutants, in particular ozone, on asthma. Ozone induces airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness which are characteristics of asthma. We have developed an ozone-induced nonallergic asthma model using rat tracheal smooth muscle and have evaluated the role of airway epithelium on the modulation of muscle responsiveness. We are currently pursuing our research on investigating a role of ozone in relation to the developments and/or exacerbations of asthma.

Other areas of research include airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness in asthma, upper air way hyperresponsivenel in dsthma dyspnea perception in asthma, aspirin intolerance in asthma, exercise induced bronchospasm in asthma, occupational asthma, allergic rhinitis, urticaria and/or angioedema, drug allergy, natural killer Tcells in asthma, and so on.
